I have already mentioned that i used live cd as my host system.You can download the required iso image from the LFS site.I used the version
lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2160.iso
Here is the configuration of VMware Machine I used for LFS project.
Workstation : 6
Operating system : Other Linux 2.6.x kernel
Number of Processor : 2
Memory or Ram (MB) : 1024
Network Type : NAT (Network Address Translation)
I/O Adapter type : LSI Logic
Disk Type : SCSI
Disk Capacity (GB) : 8(split into 2GB files)
It took me 2 weeks to develop the LFS system(with regular breaks in between).Time required to complete the LFS project purely depends on the configuration of system and the breaks you take in between.It could vary from 2 days to 2 months and even more…..

You need to download the book and packages from the site.LFS book will teach you how to compile and install minimum packages and how to arrange them to build your system.
